The
year was 1954. One Spring day, after the school bell rang we
all lined up to go to our respective classes. The Principal
appeared at the entrance of the building to make an important
announcement. We all hushed. The Principal said
that there was going to be a Concert next week, the tickets were
10 Rials each and on a half-day school, she and the teachers will
accompany us to the Concert.
The
day arrived. After the last bell rang, those of us who had
purchased tickets waited around in anticipation. We didn't
know for sure who the performer or performers were going to be. The
Principal and the teachers showed up, we lined up and followed
them. We walked to a Boys' School a few blocks away
that had a big Sports Hall (as they were called then!).
We
all took our seats. The
excitement was palpable. After
a long time that seemed like an eternity to me, the Curtain
opened. On the stage there was a man sitting on a chair,
holding a small drum on his lap. In the center of the stage,
there was a microphone with a chair in front of it. We
whispered in excitement, The man started playing the drum.
From
the back of the stage a beautiful little girl with dark blond
hair, ran onto the stage, climbed up on the chair, and
greeted us with a big smile. She sang, she danced, she told
jokes! Yes. Jokes. I even remember the last sentence
of one that went like this: ".....Khodaya barayeh
hameh bood, baraye man yeki nabood?" We laughed.
Enjoyed her performance to no end. And, as
young as we were, we recognized the AWESOME TALENT AND STAGE
PRESENCE.
We
talked about it for years to come....
The
year was 2000. The
excitement was palpable in the
Oakland Arena on September 23rd. This time, she did not run;
she walked onto the stage like a welcome breeze; elegant and
graceful; her beautiful face reflecting the love that was thrown
at her feet at that moment by thousands from the bottom of
their hearts.
Yes.
I just purchased my ticket to
Las Vegas
. At 8PM on Dec. 25th, I will journey back to 1954 for a
moment, then bask in the awesome presence of our ONE
AND ONLY DIVA.
